day5: began the day still tired from the Sesame escapade. Pa would say, "take it easy!" We dropped John off at work and drove to the East Village. We went to Two Boots Pizza because there was a parking spot there. (cute and mediocre again - nothing tastes as good as the Giordano's deep dish I brought as a gift from home.) Gracie had a tantrum on the way out and I held her screaming under my arm while herding the other kids toward the car. I had coffee jitters again and an empathy stomach ache for my sister's various stresses. I wanted to slam my head against the wall and scream, but I just cried a little, stuffed into the backseat with the other criers. That let off a little of the pressure.
We walked around the farmers market, got juices, played at the park, walked past shops. I felt completely better after buying myself sunglasses and letting Charlotte pick out whatever headband she wanted, to reward her for her outstanding patience yesterday in the car. She thanked me sincerely, several times. Margaret's earache became debilitating, so we didn't make it around the navy yards for painting photos.
Later, my sister played outside in the rain with all the kids, some under a big umbrella and some in a kiddie pool. This gave me invaluable time to relax alone and write about the trip so far. They filled water balloons in the thunder. She has an adorable, private postage stamp backyard with a stone wall, garden and swingset, encircled by taller buildings; it's really charming.
We took it easy and had late night sushi delivered.
